January - week 2 of school

Dear Cranston Families;

Happy New Year from Ms. Patton!!  Here is what the second week of school is looking like for 2018!

1. Gymnastics - Mrs. Sedgewick and Ms. MacMillan are running a gymnastics program from now until February 2.  In the Weekly News sent to your email from the office and in a blog post from last week, you will find a list of expectations for gymnastics.  Please review them and have the children follow  them for the next 3 weeks.

2.  Book Exchange - Students will continue to exchange their books from the Learning Commons every Wednesday.  Each child is allowed to sign out 2 books at a time.  Everyone is encouraged to return or renew his/her books each week so that we can keep track of our library inventory.

3.  Parent-Teacher Interviews - January 25th (4:00 - 7:00 p.m.) and January 26th (8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon).  Sign up will begin on January 18th when the office staff sends you an email.  All parents are encouraged to attend interviews with Mrs. Vandertoorn and myself.

4.  Fun Lunch - The next Fun Lunch is Wednesday January 24th.  Please check to see if you have ordered for your child.  There were many disappointed students last week when they realized that they didn't get fun lunch.  On that note, food not eaten will be sent home in lunch bags so that you know what your child is eating on these special days.

5.  News from the classroom - Students are continuing their Panda Inquiry by researching the Lifecycle of either the Giant Panda or the Red Panda.  We will be using a variety of resources for this research including links on Learn Alberta.  This covers the Animal Life Cycle topic in Science.

In Social Studies the children continue to look at the different landforms throughout the world.  They will be creating topical maps of various landforms using salt dough.  Watch for either a blog post or email for when this will be happening in the classroom.  Students should wear old clothing or bring an old shirt he/she can wear over their clothing to protect themselves.

In Literacy, students  continue to enjoy "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" as a read aloud.  Please watch for a permission form to be sent home in the next couple of weeks so that we can watch the movie as part of the Book/movie review writing process and comparison study we are working on.

Students are working on developing personal strategies for addition and subtraction of 3 digit numbers.  This does include the direct teaching of using regrouping when using stacked equations. Students are learning how to solve word problems for adding and subtracting as well.

6.  Dressing for the Weather - I hate to sound like a broken record (for those of you who know what I'm talking about) but please check the weather forecast and dress your child appropriately for going to school.  We do take the children outside for body breaks, lunch recess and gym even in colder weather.  Snow pants, winter coats, hats, neck warmers (or scarves), mittens and winter boots are a must in Alberta.  You never know when the weather will change.  The school policy is to keep children indoors when the temperature gets below -20 C with or without windchill.

7. Field Trips - Students in room 75 will be going on at least two field trips this year:  The National Music Centre and the Calgary Zoo.  Both field trips are in May.  Swimming has also been planned for sometime in April.  Dates for all these events will be sent home via the Blog or Weekly News Update when everything has been confirmed.  If you would like to volunteer for any of these events, please ensure that you have a current Volunteer Security Clearance.  If you don't have one, yet, they take between 6-8 weeks to get.  Contact our wonderful office staff for details.

Have a wonderful week!

Ms. Patton
