Pi, Pie, and plenty more!

Today, we ate our Pi Day pies and... they were delicious!  Despite the challenges with getting the crust just right, several of the children declared it to be the best pie they had ever had!  Indeed, the crust was flaky and the filling was sweet and crisp.  Thank you so much to all of the parents who volunteered to help on Wednesday with the pie making - and the clean-up!

We have begun our work on literature circles and are learning each of the roles, as a class, before we move into our novel groups.  Literature circles are similar to an adult book club, but with greater structure, expectation, and rigor.  Literature circles provide a way for students to engage in critical thinking and reflection as they read, discuss, and respond to books. Collaboration is at the heart of this approach. Students reshape and add onto their understanding as they construct meaning with other readers.

In Math, we have moved into multiplication and division.  The students handled doubling and trebling the pie recipe with skill - including the fraction measurements!  Baking together really is a great way to reinforce Math skills at home.  Additionally, we have been working with our new (Parent Council purchased - thank you!) Mathology resources.  You can access the book, "Sports Camp" online, which is a resource we used while introducing multiplication and division.  This link also includes activities that you may do at home.

We have completed our second engineering project.  Last week we built prototypes to safely deliver a raw egg from the tallest height possible and today we went outside and dropped our eggs!  Breaking eggs was exciting, to say the least!  I've attached a short video clip - with slow motion egg dropping!

Have a great weekend!

Mrs. V and Ms. P
