Wonderful Precepts - Homework!
We have begun our class novel, "Wonder", by R. J. Palacio. Auggie, the main character, is a grade 5 student, with a unique, and very different, face. One of his teachers, Mr. Browne, begins each month of class with a precept. A precept is (quite generally) a rule to guide behaviour. We have encountered two of Mr. Browne's precepts so far and have had some good discussions around them.
September's precept:
October's precept:
The children have related these precepts to some of the inspirational quotations we use in our journal writing and our discussion of October's precept led us to another famous quotation, paraphrased from Emerson:
We have asked the students to discuss this quotation at home, and return to class ready to share some of the thoughts from their conversation with you. So... a little bit of homework for everyone! I hope you enjoy hearing your child's thoughts around this as much as I do!

September's precept:
"When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind."
October's precept:
"Our deeds are our monuments."
The children have related these precepts to some of the inspirational quotations we use in our journal writing and our discussion of October's precept led us to another famous quotation, paraphrased from Emerson:
"What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say."
We have asked the students to discuss this quotation at home, and return to class ready to share some of the thoughts from their conversation with you. So... a little bit of homework for everyone! I hope you enjoy hearing your child's thoughts around this as much as I do!
